Hello,

Sorry to write in English, my Italian is just too basic.
My name is Marc and I am a BMW coupé addict in Switzerland.

I own a few special ones, among which an authentic B9 E24 of the 1st series.

Of the 75 B9 Coupes, the two first had the early e24 chassis, the other 73 had the E24/1 chassis.
These two early Coupés were "Entwicklungsfahrzeuge". They had their Alpina numbers mixed with the numbers of the first E28 B9 - the early ones, which still had a 3451ccm M90 engine.

The 1st of these "development cars" had engine B9-010, it was red and it was tested in Auto Motor Sport 05/82 (plates OAL-CY5). It was eventually sold to Japan in the end of 1982.

The 2nd one had engine B9-035, was Arktisblau and had an auto gearbox. Probably this is the very first Alpina ever made without a clutch. The car was delivered to Alpina already in March 1981 and never received identification plates before it was re-sold to a German Alpina dealer in September 82. It went directly to Switzerland, where it got its first registration.

When I bought it in Zurich in 2000 I thought it was just a plain E24 with Alpina bits and my idea was to keep only the special parts.
But, looking closer, I started to wonder.
Except for the engine and gearbox, everything else was like a contemporary B7S:
big brakes, 2.93 cooled differential, 300km/h tacho.
Maybe too much for a simple conversion ?
So I wrote to Alpina to make sure it was not a mistake to dismantle the car.
And I am glad I did.

Even with its auto box, the car is alot of fun to drive, extremely torquey.
In character it is very raw and noisy. Like an early E24 in fact, but on mega-steroids.
I used it only two years. It is not registered since 2002, waiting for restoration.
God knows when...

Thank you for all your welcoming messages !

Here are more pictures of the B9.
As you can see there will be quite a lot of work to make it look good again :
new left rear wing, new front mask, one engine support needs replacement, complete paint, etc.
Mechanically it is ok, thought.

The white Coupé on the last picture is also a B9, which I bought the same year (in 2000), but sold since.
With engine Nr B9/1-032 it was the first of the 73 B9/1 Coupés Alpina produced (again the numbers are mixed with the numers of the B9/1 E28s).
The last B9 Coupé and the first B9/1 Coupé...
The two cars were very different in character, but they were consecutive chronologically (both sold in September 1982).

The front Alpina air dam will be restored?:)

Automatic Transmission?

Yes, probably for the first time on an Alpina.

Among the 73 B9/1 Coupés and among the numerous B9/1 E28, several had the 4-speed automatic transmission.
My car has the old 3-speed, and the BMW VIN is the one of an automatic.

Just as a reminder: the difference between the B9 and B9/1 engines is the block.
The B9 is based on the "square" 3451ccm M90 block, with its siamese cylinder walls (93,4 x 84).
The B9/1 is based on the stroker 3430ccm M30 block (92 x 86).

Not sure.

The car had an air dam in the past - the mounting holes are there.

It was missing when I got the car, so I I bought a brand new one back then.
But never mounted it : I like the design of these cars without accessories.

Paul Brack did a brilliant job, and in my opinion all later additions/evolutions kind of spoiled it.

I own 2 e24, an M635csi with full body kit and a 635csi/2 spoilered, for my flavour i think them to be both the 2 better 6 series, followed by alpina styling, last series and first series wih spoilers, those 3 liked about the same.
The first 6 and the followerd without spoilers don't capture my likes, they look unfinished imho.
But i think that likes apart, an original and rare Alpina needs all the warrior paint, stripes and spoilers:p

It is a dilemma for me.
Anyway I have all the original parts, air dam & stripes, so the choice will always be there.

Initially the stripes on this car were already of the new type (filigrane-like) and gold. Not my taste.
The NOS ones I have are of the old type, the thick flashy ones, in silver.

Also, the car always had the rear spoiler it has now, not the thick Alpina one.
And the (Recaro) seats never had Alpina cloth.
Their blue-grey velours is cooked, so they will probably be replaced by a black Recaro interior I have in stock.

I think such a special car should be restored as it came aout from Alpina, but is your choice:)

I will have time to think about it...
In all likeliness the restoration will not take place before a long time.
Other car projects are given higher priority.

What projects?:p
I am also in the sam situation, too much projects, not enough time.

Hard to tell what will come first.
Some projects have been sleeping for many years.
For some I have been collecting the (rare) missing elements little by little, over a long time.
Most of what is still missing now is work.

In a world without constraints the first project would be my Batmobile.
Delivered on Friday 13th (!!!) of July 1973, it was the 3rd one to be built.
And also one of seven Bats delivered to BMW themselves between end of July and beginning of August 73.
I am 99% sure my car is M-YM313, the first press-bat, but have not found a formal proof yet.
It seems that this car is the oldest known surviving Bat (of course this could change anyday).
The car is pretty rusty.

A close second would be the construction of a 1972 or 73 Gr.2 Schnitzer "tribute".
I do not yet have the shell, but have managed to gather 90% of the rest of the car.
Schnitzer race engine with slide throttle and dry sump, ZF box, 3.5 turn steering box, Gr.2 suspension, Lockheed closed back brake calipers, etc. Still missing the correct wing extensions, though.
Of course I would love to be able to afford an original period racer, but this not in my financial range.
Anyway I prefer a very well done repro (correct in every detail) to a very waisted/unfaithful original (like it is the case too often). And the good thing about a repro is that you are less scared to brake it. :)

Other sleeping projects are to fix my Baur TC1, to re-assemble a normal road going E9, to rebuild my 1970 Maggiolino.

I wonder if I will ever manage to complete half of these projects...

I sold my project 02 targa because of time and lust to put it together..

I have an ld 735i of my father which i started to restore in 1997... 15 years now, but some parts are unavaliable new and used...:(

I am progressing at the same kind of speed.

In 1994 I bought the Bat without front seats, they had just been stolen.
The driver's seat is ultra rare, with 3-step adjustment wheel on the right side.
I managed to buy one only a few months ago, after 18 years !

The Schnitzer racer project started in 2003, when I found the engine and the gearbox.
The Kugelfischer pump and its support where missing.
Finding an injection pump was not too hard.
But finding the holder (a well executed reproduction, casted from an original) took me 9 years.

Life is too short.

Iknow how rare are the reclining seats, i boughn one in 1999, but it was a luck!
I own my own bat since 98... restored in 2002 and since then nearly never used..

Hi Batman, and welcome!
You have a lot of nice and interesting projects undergoing, indeed!
Would you like to share more? I am particularly interested in knowing if you outsource your work, or if a lot of DIY is involved.
Thank you for sharing all the info about the e24 alpinas, some of the nicest car ever built in my opinion!

These B9, B9/1 and B10 engines are a joy to use.
They are perfect for maximum driving pleasure in real life driving conditions.
Very responsive, not super powerful in the higher revs because of the 268° cam, but with plenty of torque everywhere.

They also are a wonderful working base for sportier engines.
In a CSL I used for track days a few years ago I installed a B9/1 engine with 3x DHLA45, 300° Motorsport cam and some porting work. Fantastic engine with neck-braking acceleration...

I do a lot of work myself.
Body work is outsourced (panel beating, welding, painting), but I disassemble/reassemble everything before and after.
Complicated mechanical things, like cylinder head overhaul, manifold porting, gearbox and differential rebuilds are also outsourced.
But I do install DCOEs or DHLAs, build my own carb linkages, work on brakes and suspensions, change head gaskets and con rod bearings. I also tune up my engines and like to experiment things (like D-Jet on a 3.5).

Here are a few pictures of 2275489, the sleeping Batmobile.

The three first pictures show the car in 1994 in the seller's garage.

The three next ones were taken recently.
Almost no changes : a little bit of sanding, different wheels and details, as much rust.
